Over the years, I have had the absolute pleasure in photographing so many beautiful families and many, where one of the children has additional needs.
I think my openness about my son, jimmy not only having a physical disability (cerebral palsy) but also he has epilepsy, autism and hearing difficulties which can effect his speech, helps the families with a child with additional needs connect with me as a fellow parent of a super awesome and unique little person.
I photograph him all the time, he is my muse and motivation so that’s not going to stop! He struggles a little when a photographer friend photographs us as a family. The weather might be to sunny or to cold, the grass might be to spiky or he might not like the smell of a location. Sometimes, anxiety gets the better of him and he will suddenly need the toilet and quite often, we won’t be near one.
So as a parent, I get kids. As a parent of a kid with additional needs, I double get it.
I have recently received messages from parents who would love to have family photos but already have these anxieties and worries in their minds and I just want to say…..GET THE PHOTOS. Those anxieties quite possibly won’t go away BUT the can reduce with the right photographer. Someone who can let your family be exactly who they are, someone who can connect with you all and give you the time, attention and space when needed during your shoot.
This is one of the reasons why I photograph families the way I do. To let the kids and you guys as parents have a positive experience, no forced smiling, no fakes, all natural YOU moments, whatever they may look like. AND at the end of it for you to have beautiful pictures of your family to treasure.
The universe knows you bloody well deserve it!
